It’s Official: Work is Bad. Holidays are Good.

How much work is actually good for you? Not as much as you might think. New research shows long, stressful days don't actually pay in the long run. We say, great! Put on the 'out of office' and check out our top places to escape this Summer.

We've been saying it for years. Life is for living. Too much time spent at your desk working is counterproductive.

Now new research has proved we were right all along. A European-wide study reveals that long hours as well as the intensity of the modern working world, whether tight deadlines or a fast, relentless pace is not only bad for our physical and mental health, it also harms our future career prospects.

The study, 'Implications of work effort and discretion for employee well-being and career-related outcomes: an integrative assessment' looked at data from over 50,000 employees across Europe.

The researchers found that when people of similar educational levels and who had similar jobs  worked intensively over long periods of time, they were more likely to experience both lower levels of wellbeing and worse career prospects including job security, promotion and satisfaction. Stress-related illness and burnout, anyone?

One of the study’s authors Hans Frankort, senior lecturer in strategy, Cass Business School told the Financial Times: “it may be a mistake to accept reduced wellbeing in the hopes of improving future career prospects.” Put simply, too much intense work makes you ill, unhappy and frankly (like Jack) a bit dull. Plus it’s not worth it because it probably won’t get you a better job.

Enough with the science, though.  Here’s what you do about it.

Passionate about Travel for Business & Pleasure

At Red7 we’re passionate about the power of travel – whether it’s about getting away to relax, celebrate, see something new, or simply restoring your faith in the world and your spirit. We’ve been organising great holidays for groups and individuals for over 21 years. We were the first company in the UK to organise pre-packaged Hen, Stag and Sten holidays and have helped over a million clients celebrate pre-wedding.

Now we’ve expanded to organise all sorts of Occasion and Celebration travel. We also run Sports Team Tours for both adults and children and have recently relaunched a new and improved Business Travel Service for SMEs, which includes establishing managing Staff Holiday Clubs for your employees, organising incentive travel for your staff. Think perk holidays, people. These days, when it comes to staff retention it’s all about the perks. You can read all about how incentive travel rewards and retains the best employees here.
